Overview

The Taj Mahal is a world-renowned mausoleum located in Agra, India, and is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. A tour of the Taj Mahal typically involves exploring the site, learning about its history and significance, and taking in the stunning architectural and decorative features of the building.

During a Taj Mahal tour, visitors can expect to see the white marble structure of the mausoleum itself, as well as the surrounding gardens, water features, and decorative elements. Many tours also include a visit to the nearby Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the residence of the Mughal emperors.

Other popular activities during a Taj Mahal tour include taking a boat ride on the Yamuna River, visiting the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah (often called the "Baby Taj"), and exploring the local markets and food stalls in Agra.

Visitors should be prepared for large crowds, especially during peak tourist season, and should dress appropriately for the weather (which can be quite hot and humid in the summer). It is also important to respect the cultural and religious significance of the Taj Mahal, which is considered a sacred site by many Indians.

Shah Jahan the fifth emperor of the Mughal dynasty, got this monument constructed in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It was embellished by several precious and semi-precious stones. Which were brought to Agra from across the world. However as per the Islamic beliefs, graves aren’t supposed to be decorated, this is the reason the mausoleum of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal are not decorated. Most of the calligraphy done on walls of the Taj Mahal was taken from the holy book of the Quran.

The Mughals constructed it during 1565-1571. Emperor Akbar laid the foundation of this majestic citadel in 1565, however, Emperor Shahjahan, Akbar's grandson completed the fort in 1571. Later in the years, he was imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb for eight long years in Musanman Burj overlooking the Taj Mahal where he had taken his last breath.
